Buyer search and price dispersion: a laboratory study

چکیده

We study markets with costly buyer search in which sellers simultaneously post prices. Buyers costlessly observe one or (with probability 1 q) two of the posted prices, and can accept one or pay to search again. The experiment varies q, the search cost, and the number of buyers. Equilibrium theory predicts a unified very low (high) price for q=0 (q=1) and predicts specific distributions of dispersed prices for q=1/3 and 2/3. Actual prices conform closely to the predictions in some treatments. Buyers’ reservation prices are biased away from the extremes, however, and sellers’ prices have positive autocorrelation and cross-sectional correlation. r 2003 Elsevier Science (USA). An experimental study of price dispersion in an optimal search model with advertising

This paper reports a laboratory experiment to study pricing and advertising behavior with costly buyer search. Sellers simultaneously post prices and may incur a cost to advertise this price. In the unique symmetric equilibrium, sellers either charge a high unadvertised price or randomize in an interval of lower advertised prices. Increases in search or advertising costs raise equilibrium price...

A discrete particle swarm optimization algorithm with local search for a production-based two-echelon single-vendor multiple-buyer supply chain

This paper formulates a two-echelon single-producer multi-buyer supply chain model, while a single product is produced and transported to the buyers by the producer. The producer and the buyers apply vendor-managed inventory mode of operation. It is assumed that the producer applies economic production quantity policy, which implies a constant production rate at the producer. The operational pa...

The Market is Flat (or is it?) The Effect of Electronic Trading on Buyer Reach, Geographic Transaction Activity and Geographic Price Variance

We analyze how increased use of electronic channels affects geographic price variance by enabling buyers to shift demand across locations. Using data from the wholesale automotive market from 2003 to 2008, we find that buyers use the reach of the electronic channels to shift purchases from high-price to low-price locations. This " arbitrage " reduces the variance of market prices, but not their...

An Experimental Study of the Negative Externality from Improved Information in a Differentiated Products Search Model

This experimental study examines whether the content of information and the timing of its dissemination affects firms’ market power. We construct laboratory markets that capture the key features of a price-setting, differentiated goods, duopoly model analyzed by Anderson and Renault (2000). Consumers must typically incur a search cost in order to obtain any information, but a fraction of the co...

Group Decision and Negotiation (in press) Bargaining and Search: An Experimental Study

We study experimentally two versions of a model in which a buyer and a seller bargain over the price of a good; however, the buyer can choose to leave the negotiation table to search for other alternatives. Under one version, if the buyer chooses to search for a better price, the opportunity to purchase the good at the stated price is gone. Under the second version, the seller guarantees the sa...
